How Much Does a Doula Cost in Perth?
If you've been searching for a doula in Perth, one of the first questions you've probably typed into Google is: how much does a doula cost in Perth?
It's a completely fair question. Pregnancy and preparing for a baby come with plenty of expenses, and if you're considering a birth doula, you'll want to know exactly what you're paying for.
There isn't one standard price. Cost varies with the doula's experience and training, how much prenatal and postpartum support is included, and whether you're booking complete birth support or individual sessions. This guide covers what affects Perth doula prices, what a package can include, and what to consider when deciding if doula support is right for you.
How much does a birth doula cost in Perth?
In Perth, individual birth preparation or prenatal sessions generally start at a few hundred dollars, while comprehensive birth doula packages typically cost somewhere from around $2,000 to $2,600 or more, depending on what's included. (Prices were checked in October 2026, so always confirm current rates with each doula.)
That looks like a big gap, but comparing doula prices isn't as simple as comparing hourly rates. A comprehensive package can include months of pregnancy support, several prenatal appointments, on-call availability, continuous labour support and postpartum care. When you compare Perth doulas, look closely at what's actually included.

What does a Perth birth doula package usually include?
Every doula works differently, but birth doula services in Perth may include:
- Prenatal birth preparation appointments
- Birth preferences and birth-plan support
- Education around labour and birth
- Partner preparation
- Labour positions and comfort techniques
- Phone and text support during pregnancy
- On-call support around your due date
- Continuous support throughout labour and birth
- Massage, counterpressure and physical comfort
- Breathing and relaxation techniques
- Help understanding your options
- Postpartum visits and birth debriefing
- Feeding and newborn support
- Referrals to other pregnancy and postpartum professionals
That's why it's worth comparing the whole service rather than just searching for the cheapest doula in Perth.
Why can birth doula support cost thousands of dollars?
You're paying for far more than the hours your doula is physically beside you during birth.
When a doula goes on-call, she has to be ready for your baby to arrive at any time. Labour might begin at 11am on a Tuesday or 2am on a Sunday, and it might last five hours or run through an entire night. During that window, your doula stays relatively close, keeps her phone available, arranges family or childcare cover and makes sure she can leave the moment you need her.
There are also many hours of work before birth begins: prenatal appointments, messages, birth preparation, resources, equipment, travel, postpartum visits, insurance, administration and ongoing education.
So you're not simply paying someone to attend your birth. You're paying for continuity of support through one of the biggest transitions of your life.
Payment options for doula support
I know doula support is a significant investment, which is why payments can be spread across your pregnancy rather than needing to be paid all at once.
A 20% retainer secures your booking, with the remaining balance due by 35 weeks.
If you're considering doula support but are unsure which package best suits your needs or budget, you're always welcome to reach out and have a chat with me first.
Doula support is generally privately paid in Australia, so it's always worth checking directly with your private health insurer if you'd like to know whether your individual policy offers any benefits.
Is a doula worth the cost?
This will be different for every family. For some women, having a doula means having someone they already know beside them when labour begins: someone who has spent hours talking through their preferences, understands what helps them feel calm, can support their partner, and can remind them of their options when they're tired or overwhelmed. Someone who stays.
I don't believe good doula support should make you dependent on your doula. It should help you feel more confident in yourself, your body and your choices. You are still the person giving birth. I'm simply there in your corner while you do it. 💛
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need a doula if I have a partner?
Absolutely, if doula support is something you want. A doula isn't there to replace your partner. When labour becomes intense, it can be hard for someone who loves you to remember every birth class, comfort technique or position you've discussed. A doula can suggest positions, show your partner where to apply counterpressure, remind you both of your preferences and reassure them they're doing a great job. Your partner knows and loves you. Your doula brings experience, preparation and practical tools. The two roles work beautifully together.
Does a doula replace my midwife or doctor?
No. A birth doula is a non-clinical support person. Your midwife, obstetrician or medical team remains responsible for your clinical maternity care. My role is to provide emotional, physical and informational support while working alongside your chosen care providers.
Can I have a doula for a hospital birth in Perth?
Yes. Doulas aren't only for homebirth. A Perth doula can support hospital births, birth centre births, homebirths, inductions, VBACs, planned caesareans, and births where plans change along the way. The goal isn't to steer you towards one type of birth. It's to help you feel informed, supported and respected through the birth you're having.
How do I choose the right doula in Perth?
Price matters, but it shouldn't be the only thing you consider. I recommend meeting your potential doula first. Ask about her approach to birth, what her package includes, when she goes on-call, what her backup arrangements are, and what happens if labour is very long. Ask about partner support and postpartum care too.
Most importantly, notice how you feel around her. Birth is vulnerable and intimate, and you want someone beside you who makes you feel safe, heard and completely comfortable being yourself.
