What Does a Birth Doula Actually Do? A Guide for Perth Mamas 💛
If you're wondering what a birth doula actually does, I'm here to explain how doula support can help you and your birth partner feel informed, prepared and cared for throughout pregnancy, labour and birth in Perth.
If you're pregnant, you've probably heard the word doula floating around. Perhaps a friend has mentioned having one, or you've come across a beautiful birth story online and wondered what a doula actually does.
Do you need one if you already have a midwife? What if your partner is attending your birth? And what does having a doula actually look like?
Hello Mama, I'm Mon — a Perth doula, photographer and mother of five, and I'd love to walk you through it.

So, what exactly is a birth doula?
A birth doula is a non-medical support person who offers emotional, physical and
informational support throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and, depending on your package,
the postpartum period. Unlike your midwife or obstetrician, a doula
doesn't provide medical care, perform clinical examinations or make medical decisions for you.
My role is to be a familiar, supportive presence. I'm there to listen,
help you explore your options, offer comfort and support you in
communicating with your maternity care team.
Because while your baby matters deeply, so do you. 💛
Support begins long before labour
When you book doula support with Golden Hour, we spend time getting to know one another and
preparing for your birth. Through our prenatal appointments, we'll explore your
hopes, concerns, preferences and the things that help you feel safe and supported.
We'll also work through practical preparation, including labour positions, c
ofort measures, pain relief options and the role your partner would love to play.
Every woman is different. My aim isn't to give you a perfect birth plan to follow —
it's to help you approach birth feeling informed, supported and more familiar with your options.

What does a doula do during labour?
Labour is unpredictable, and what feels helpful can change from one moment to the next.
Depending on your needs and preferences, my support might look like:
Offering massage, counterpressure or other comfort measures.
Helping you explore different positions and movement.
Creating a calmer environment with lighting, music or little comforts.
Offering reassurance and encouragement.
Bringing you water, a cool cloth or another practical comfort.
Helping you and your partner remember questions you'd like to ask your care team.
Simply sitting quietly beside you when that's what you need.
Sometimes support is hands-on. Sometimes it's giving you space.
There's no single way to birth, and there's no single way to doula.
But what about my partner?
This is one of my favourite things to talk about!
Having a doula doesn't mean replacing your husband, partner or chosen support person.
Quite the opposite.
Your partner knows and loves you in a way I never could. My role is to work alongside them,
helping them feel informed, included and supported too.
During our prenatal appointments, we can explore how they'd like to be
involved and practise ways they can offer comfort during labour.
And during birth, I can provide an extra set of hands so they can take a moment to eat,
est or simply focus on being present with you.
We're a team, Mama. 💛

Does a doula only support natural birth?
Absolutely not.
Whether you're planning a hospital birth, birth centre birth or supported homebirth,
whether you're hoping to use an epidural or avoid medication, your preferences deserve to be respected.
If circumstances change or your birth unfolds differently from what you imagined,
my role remains the same: to offer support, help you feel heard and work alongside your maternity care team.
You don't need to have a particular kind of birth to deserve doula support.
And what happens after baby arrives?
Support doesn't have to stop the moment your baby is born.
Depending on your chosen package, postpartum support can include emotional
reassurance, practical assistance, time to rest and a listening ear
as you settle into life with your newest family member.
Because so much attention naturally turns to the baby, but you deserve care too.
